Tomorrow is Hellboy Day - Captain Benjamin Daimio
When one thinks of Benjamin Daimio, the first thing that typically comes to mind is… pants. (read B.P.R.D., you’ll get it)
Daimio joined the B.P.R.D. shortly after Hellboy left. Entering with a glowing personality, Daimio was pretty much hated by most of the team initially, particularly Elizabeth Sherman, who in fairness hates everyone. However Damio grew on everyone, and he found himself a role as a pivotal member of the team. He even became a role model of sorts to Roger, although this was arguably a bad thing as Roger pretty much just became a jerk.
One of his most distinguishing features is the massive scar left on his face. This was the result of a mission gone horribly wrong during his time as a marine. Daimio and his team were sent on a rescue mission in Bolivia to save a group of nuns. What they encountered they were woefully under-prepared for: a cult worshiping a jaguar god that had been killing people in the area. The god itself slaughtered his whole team without being seen once, and at the last minute spared Daimio, instilling itself in him and giving him a new life as host to this monster. Daimio was presumed dead, but burst to life in a morgue confused and terrified. He has to take special precautions in order to keep this monster from taking over his body (think of it like being a werewolf). He has a special massage therapist that helps control his emotions, using seemingly mystical incense to keep the spirit in control.
This didn’t last. One day the spirit took control, and Daimio transformed into the horrifying jaguar god and started killing everyone in the immediate area. This led to him destroying Johan Kraus’s new body, which caused Kraus to plot revenge against him. Daimio escaped and hid in seclusion, where he located Daryl the Wendigo and stayed close to him.
During the time of his hiding, Daimio was located by Abe, who gave him supplies and helped him feel more at home. Still, Daimio would refuse to return to the B.P.R.D.. Catching onto this, Johan Kraus followed Abe’s info on where Daimio was located and plotted a scheme to kill him. Johan took a troop of B.P.R.D. agents, misleading them under the guise of it being a different mission. Johan attempted to sneak off in the middle of the night to kill Ben, it ended up getting let back to the B.P.R.D. unit and killing most of them. Johan was unable to kill Daimio, and his containment suit was destroyed. This didn’t matter, however, as Daimio became suicidal. He forced the wendigo into a position where he had to kill him, and the two fought for a very long time until he finally died, hence the issue’s name “the long death.”
Benjamin is actually the grandson of the Crimson Lotus, a witch and Japanese spy who notably fought the Lobster. Ben swears that she wasn’t actually a witch, that she just practiced some fake magic. Damio’s whole immediate family is military, leading to his life in the B.P.R.D..
