13 days until Hellboy Day - Crimson Lotus
Note, when this article was written, the last of the 5 part comic featuring Crimson Lotus had not been released.
Crimson Lotus is one of those minor characters in the Mignolaverse that, while not having a massive role, cast a long shadow over the B.P.R.D. and its members. This is especially true for Benjamin Daimio, her grandson. Crimson Lotus’ real name was Daimio Yumiko, born in imperialist Japan sometime before 1900. As a very young girl, she witnessed the horrific murder of her father, an event which seemed to have pushed her to study magic.
She became an extremely powerful witch as well as a spy for Japan..During World War II she was responsible for the capture and death of many American soldiers. She seems to have a cruel streak and didn't hesitate to kill anyone in her way to get want she wanted. Even when they were dead, she would often extract information from her victims.
When she wasn't using her magic, Yumiko had an army of little “Noh monkeys” to do her bidding. The tiny creatures obeyed her and seemed to have almost human intelligence. They were seen shooting guns, setting up a dynamite rig, and turning off room lights. She clashed several times with the Lobster, and on one occasion their tussle resulted in her being photographed on U.S. soil. This caused the Bureau of Investigation to seize all evidence related to her from the local police and use it as proof of a Japanese spy in America.. Among the items seized was the body of one of her Noh Monkeys, which years later would come in the possession of the B.P.R.D. causing Benjamin Daimio great stress and mental agony, and also raise the question of how much his grandmothers magic and actions have haunted her despondence.
The fate of the Crimson Lotus is currently unclear.
