19 days until Hellboy Day - Zinco CEOs

Zinco-Davis was a global corporation, and a military contractor based in the United States.  They provided much of the B.P.R.D.’s equipment, as well as worldwide defense projects. Eventually, they would focus their research and development on technology to improve quality of life.  Unfortunately, their overt projects on scratched the surface of their operations. The Zinco secret projects were their main concentration, with Ragna Rok as their final goal.

In 1996, Roderick Zinco, CEO of his family’s company, was vacationing on his personal Island retreat in the Caribbean, when he happened upon a strange man.  In his billionaire’s arrogance, he approached this man with the intent to have him removed from his beach. When he reached him, it became clear that this was not a man, but a ghost.  It was the Ghost of Grigori Rasputin, whom Zinco would come to call “The Master”.

Rasputin provided Zinco with a sense of purpose, and instructed him to seek out the mad monk’s former associates in Norway.  He wanted the CEO to provide Project Ragna Rok with resources to complete their mission. Zinco accepted this task, and using his vast wealth, located Leopold Kurtz, Karl Ruprect Kroenen, and Ilsa Haupstein in their former cryogenic refuge.  He made himself known as a servant of the same master, and provided them with money, equipment, and more, in order to better serve Ragna Rok.

Roderick Zinco made the mistake of fulfilling a special request for Kroenen, locating Herman Von Klempt from the depths of the South American jungle.  When Kroenen and Kurtz came to blows over Von Klempts arrogance, Rasputin’s ghost appeared, and struck Zinco blind. In the ensuing confusion, the CEO accidentally activated the self destruct button for the castle, seemingly killing all inside.

Years later, we saw that Roderick’s second in command, Landis Pope, had risen up to the position of CEO.  The Board of Directors took issue with many of his plans, which included selling off company assets and pouring them into research and development.  Pope, being heavily influenced from the involvement with Rasputin, had dark plans of his own, and demanded that the investors trust his vision. They were unaware that his office was practically a shrine to the Nazis, Rasputin, the Ogdru Jahad, and more.

The focus of the R&D team, led by Dr Isaiah Marsten, was mostly involved with raising frog monsters.  He had hoped to use these intelligent frog monsters, and a newly developed exo-suit, to summon and control Katha-Hem, one of the 369 children of the Ogdru Jahad.  His exo-suit was modeled and inspired by the legendary entity known as the Black Flame, and he led a ritual with the frog monsters to complete his transformation. He had believed that he was controlling the frog monsters, when in fact, they were using him.  The summoning failed as the B.P.R.D. defeated Katha-Hem, and Pope was dragged away by the frog monsters.

That was not the last we had seen of Landis Pope, and upon his return, he faced the B.P.R.D. as a humbled man.  His flesh was all but burned away, and he had learned that he was not meant to be the master of the world, but partake in it’s end.  He killed a number of B.P.R.D. agents, including Roger the Homunculus, before Liz Sherman destroyed Pope, his army of frogs, and their allies with an overwhelming outburst of flame.  The underground conflict awakened a number of Ogdru Hem, turning the surface into a Hell on Earth.

After his disappearance, Landis Pope was succeeded by Dr Isaiah Marsten, formerly the head of R&D.  His new stated vision for the Zinco company, to the joy of investors and the public, was saving the world.  He wanted to provide agricultural, communication, and standard of living improvements to areas affected by the devastation caused by the raising of the Ogdru Hem.  This was all under the guise of his true secret plan, the Return of the Master, Grigori Rasputin.

To the outside world, Zinco was operating for the benefit of mankind.  They even sold the B.P.R.D. on a false promise of providing a new superhuman body for Johann Kraus,  In reality, the R&D department was working with Karl Ruprect Kroenen and Leopold Kurtz, to accelerate the body’s growth for the habitation of the Master’s soul.  Isaiah Marsten was in fact doubly deceptive, as the master he was truly anxious to retrieve, was Landis Pope. He felt that he owed everything to Mr. Pope, and believed in his vision for the future.  All of his plans were for naught, as Landis Pope was gone, and the empty host body now houseed the full power of the Black Flame entity.

It is only after it was too late that the B.P.R.D. realized the complicity of the Zinco Corporation in the hastening of the end of days.  Dr. Marsten continued to serve the Black Flame, who had risen to a position of godhood over the island of Manhattan, raising Ogdru Hem from the depths of the sea and land. Marsten, Kroenen and Kurtz, along with an army of Zinco employed mercenaries held the population of Manhattan hostage, forcing them into servitude to the Black Flame.  There were small pockets of resistance, but it was only after a frontal assault by Iosif Nichayko and his team, that Isaiah Marsten was stopped.

The final CEO of the Zinco corporation, had the shortest lived legacy.  Evelyn McDonald served as Dr Marsten’s second in command. She was not innocent, always working for the benefit of the company and Dr Marsten over humanity.  But when she took over the remnants of Zinco, she did not do it with the sense of religious obsession as those that came before.

Mcdonald served the Black Flame out of fear, not dedication, and as for the company, she had a different vision.  She found her predecessor’s clinging to the nostalgia for a racist regime offensive and unnecessary. She wanted to burn away the memories of the Third Reich which the previous company heads seemed to want to perpetuate.  She frowned upon human experimentation and the use of humans transformed by the Ogdru Hem.

During the final battle between the B.P.R.D. forces and the Black Flame, Evelyn made a redemptive decision:  Rather than follow the path of her predecessors, she chose humanity. She ordered the Zinco mercenaries to abandon the fight, and instead lead an evacuation of the civilian population.  She saved many lives that would have been lost in the conflagration between Johan Kraus, Liz Sherman, and the Black Flame. The next time we saw her, she was hanging dead in the throne room of the Black Flame, and per Varvara’s instructions, disposed of like common vermin.  Now, the legacy of the Zinco corporation is over, and with the end of everything on the horizon, it no longer matters.
