20 days until Hellboy Day - Astaroth
Astaroth, Grand-Duke of Hell, apparently had no prior knowledge of what his brother Azzael was doing when he took his own newborn infant son and cut off his right hand, placing the Right Hand of Doom in its place, but he took a very keen interest in the boy as he grew up. If Hellboy's adoptive human father, Trevor Bruttenholm, saw the potential for good in him, Astaroth saw the potential for him to be to be a true lord of Demons, and sought to both protect Hellboy from his jealous siblings and other demons, and influences him to claim his “birthright” as the Beast of the Apocalypse. He first protected Hellboy from his older sister, Gamori, in her attempt to kill him as a child, though Hellboy was unaware who either of them were at the time as they were in disguised as humans.
Throughout Hellboy’s life, Astaroth made every attempt to get Hellboy to reject his humanity and fully embrace his demon side, but he was rebuffed every time, even when the world was ending. Astaroth offered the option to Hellboy of raising an army from Hell to defeat Nimue, if only he would reclaim his place in the Demon world. Hellboy of course opted to do things his way, and his uncle left him to his fate.
After Hellboy's death and return to Hell, it became apparent that whatever interest he had in Hellboy, it was only in the power he could wield, not in any loving family ties, as he soon sent Hellboy’s two half-brothers to kill him, and goad them to claim the Right Hand of Doom for themselves. The three ended up quarreling violently with Hellboy. This quarrel ended on a rather abrupt, if comical note, when the group was literary gobbled up by The Leviathan, a monster of Hell that Astaroth had a long-standing feud with, leaving a bewildered Hellboy alone in Hell.
