The Mignolaverse community reacts
MAJOR SPOILERS TO FOLLOW. IF YOU DON’T ALREADY KNOW WHAT THIS IS ABOUT, TURN BACK NOW.
Following this week’s heartbreaker announcement of the end of the B.P.R.D. series with issue 15, I reached out to both the writers of this site, and the names of a few prominent names in our community. Below are their unedited reaction statements.
Danny Laplante - Mignolaverse.com
“The end of this title means the end of the world, and I am sad as hell about it.”
John Salinas - Hellboy Book Club Podcast
“I’m really excited about it! Of course I’m sad that one of my favorite titles is ending but that’s what makes this universe so special: there are consequences. I’m really interested to see the finale and I’m sure we will be talking about it for a while. My mind is ready but maybe not my heart.”
Kait Thompson - Aw…Crap, a Hellboy Podcast
“I feel a little sad about it ending, even though I've just started on Hellboy and I have so much to go. It's nice that he wants to tie the story up in a way that references the beginning. I'm not surprised because he [Mignola] seems like he’s always thinking about the world and story as a whole. I miss Hellboy already!!!”
Mark Tweedale - Mignolaversity/Multiversity Comics
“I've seen some comments about the B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know ending being very sudden, but from my perspective it's anything but sudden. I was having a conversation with Mike Mignola some time after the 20th anniversary, and I remember him saying something like, "Just think, by the 25th anniversary B.P.R.D. will probably be over." And, as it's currently scheduled, the final issue hits comic shops the month after the 25th anniversary. I know it was only a flippant comment, but it's amazing how accurate it turned out to be. I for one am eager to see where Mignola takes the ending. He's had it on his mind for a long time after all...”
Mark David Christenson - Aw…Crap, a Hellboy Podcast
“I'm thrilled for it to come to an end because all great things come to an end and in this current culture of reboots and resurrected shows perhaps great things need to end. Mignola made something special, unique and innovative and it was full of himself therefore by ending it I believe it allows him and more so us [the fans] to now revisit and better appreciate what he gave world.”
Brian Levi - Mignolaverse.com
“When I first heard the news, I was caught off guard, because I was expecting maybe another 15 issues, but then I was almost immediately happy. I’m literally an editor, so I’m always slicing things down. I think good art comes from some form of limitation. I love the series and enjoy when it takes its time, but I’m excited for how lean the end of this thing is going to have to be. I can’t wait.”
Laurence Campbell - Artist, B.P.R.D.: The Devil You Know
“I remember getting a phone call from Scott Allie telling me the future of BPRD and how it was going to end. This must be over 3 years ago now. The phone call blew my mind and I could tell anyone! Asking if I wanted to be involved, I think I replied yes before he finished the sentence.
One of the things I like about BPRD is that it has always been about 3 arcs, a beginning, middle and end. I like this, like all good stories there’s an ending. It’s been planned out. This makes a refreshing change to a lot of comics out there. So although I’m saddened by it ending I totally think it’s the right thing to do. I’ve immersed myself in this world for around 5 years now, it’s going to be strange for me with it ending.”
