Interview with Aubrey Lovelace from the Hellboy Book Club Podcast

Editor’s personal note: I want to apologize to Aubrey for both booking him last of the HBC interviews, and for the relative short length of this piece. He’s a great interview, and I wish I’d scheduled more time for him. It will be rectified in our next meeting. -Kevin

This is Kevin Alford from Mignolaverse.com and B.P.R.D. News. Today I’m joined by Aubrey Lovelace, host of the Hellboy Book Club, available through PodBean, and the usual sources. We’re going to talk about Aubrey’s history with the Mignolaverse, Podcasting, and entertainment in general.

Mignolaverse.com

How are you today Mr. Lovelace?

Aubrey Lovelace

I’m doing well today! How are you?

Mignolaverse.com

Well the black lung as me down, but how else am I going to feed a family of 23?

Aubrey Lovelace

Ha!

Mignolaverse.com

I’m good thank you. Before we get into the questions, thank you for all of your work on my favorite podcast.

Aubrey Lovelace

Thanks! It’s been a lot of fun making it!

Mignolaverse.com

This interview is a little different, because we’ve already talked with each other in our Hellboy Book Club video podcast, but let’s recap a little of what we talked about during that interview.

You’d read a little Hellboy before the ‘cast started, but mostly you’re a fan from the films, right?

Aubrey Lovelace

I’d started with the movies. I did try to read Seed of Destruction after I saw the first film, but I never finished it. Didn’t try again until John asked me to be apart of the podcast. And now I’m just in love with it!

Mignolaverse.com

Did you dislike it the first time, or, why didn’t you finish?

Aubrey Lovelace

I was just into different things at the time. I really don’t know why I didn’t finish it. I was reading more non-fiction books at the time I believe. But, it was so long ago I can’t remember really.

Mignolaverse.com

During the previous interview, you talked a little about other comics. Do you follow any comics outside of the Mignolaverse?

Aubrey Lovelace

I do! Where to even begin! I’ve always been a Marvel and DC fan; more Marvel then DC! Lately I’ve been a little burnt out of the big two. They have great writers and artist, but it always feels like it goes back to the beginning and nothing that changes last. I really dropped off around from Marvel when Secret Wars ended. It felt like a good jumping off place. What I’m really enjoying reading lately is East of West, Saga, and Sex Criminals.

Mignolaverse.com

The comic series I’ve heard Hellboy compared to more than most is the Sandman. Do you have any experience with that?

Aubrey Lovelace

I’ve read the first story arc and I have the single issues of “Death the High Cost of Living”. My sister is huge fan of Sandman, and anything Neil Gaiman, and she’s always telling me I need to read them. Also I have a statue of Death that my girlfriend gave me for our first Valentine’s Day together!

Mignolaverse.com

I’m certainly jealous of that. I hope you get a chance to read the full story some day. It has a wonderfully satisfying ending, not unlike our big red hero himself, although you’re pretty far away from that. What’s your favorite Hellboy story so far?

Aubrey Lovelace

Oh man that’s a hard one.  As of now I would say The Island. The creation myth in the story was one of the best I’ve ever read. But I’ve really been enjoying the journey of the story itself.

Mignolaverse.com

So you really love the deep background of the series?

Aubrey Lovelace

I do! Mignola’s world feels as rich and deep as anything that you find in other genre fiction. I like that it’s a bunch of one shots and self contained stories. I feel like each one can stand on their own, but they build into this wonderful world that Hellboy lives in. With every new story there is just something new that adds to the mythology that makes me hunger for more!

Mignolaverse.com

Good news for you then, because that never goes away. I’m constantly surprised by the things they add to the series, including how they work backward in time, while still going forward. I think you’re in for a lot of interesting surprises.

So the other two hosts are in a band, and you mentioned before you’re an artist as well?

Aubrey Lovelace

I like to draw comic type stuff, but I never really share my work anymore. I’ll sometimes show them to my girlfriend. I also love playing around with Photoshop and Illustrator. Or I did until my computer broke.

Mignolaverse.com

So, back to Hellboy, do you have a favorite character?

Aubrey Lovelace

I like Abe a lot! The design of the character is pretty awesome and I like the interaction between Abe and Hellboy. The way Mignola writes them really gives you a sense how deep their friendship goes.

Mignolaverse.com

As I told John, Abe is the correct answer. Perhaps you don’t have an answer for this one, but how much of your opinion of Abe do you think was influenced by the films?

Aubrey Lovelace

I’m not sure. I would like to think that the film makers pulled their relationship from the comics, but they way they turned Liz and Hellboy’s relationship into a romantic one you never know. Of course my love for Abe was influenced by the films. I do hear David Hyde Pierce/Doug Jones in my head when I read him.

Mignolaverse.com

Yeah, that voice was pretty fantastic. Actually, to be honest, I think I hear basically every film voice in my head when I read the comics at this point.

Aubrey Lovelace

I do too!

Mignolaverse.com

During the video interview, you said you had a favorite incredibly minor character.

Aubrey Lovelace

The lion girl from the Hydra and the Lion. I just like the way she said “I’m half lion. I can prove it!” Than she says “GRRRRRRRR”. I don’t know why I just thought it was funny and sweet. Like that’s something a kid would do and say.

Mignolaverse.com

It’s a genuinely good pick to be honest.

Are you aware of the Hellboy Board Game?

Aubrey Lovelace

I am! I really would love to play it. I don’t even know what the game play mechanics are going to be, but I'm still excited! It looks like it might be similar in play to the D&D board games that have been coming out over the last few years. Of course it could be completely different. I don’t care I want to play it!

Mignolaverse.com

I suggested to John that you should play a game during an episode like an RPG. If you do this, which character do you want to play as?

Aubrey Lovelace

Oh I don’t know! I’d like Abe if nobody grabs him first I guess, but anyone would be fun. Roger, Liz... it doesn’t matter really. I assume John would be Hellboy for the first time out!

Mignolaverse.com

Do you already know about Rodger?

Aubrey Lovelace

Only what we’ve read in the stories so far. Conquer Worm was the last one he showed up in. I don’t know what happens to him after Hellboy quit the B.P.R.D.

Mignolaverse.com

So, based on what you’ve seen and heard already, what are you most looking forward to in the comic books?

Aubrey Lovelace

B.P.R.D! I can’t wait! Also Hellboy in Hell. About a year ago I saw this video on Hellboy and color and they showed some of the art from Hellboy in Hell and it looked gorgeous!

Mignolaverse.com

I think one of the more interesting things about the Podcast will be how you and Danielle feel about things after you’ve gone further into the series.

Aubrey Lovelace

I am so looking forward to getting further into the series. I’m feeling the same type of excitement I got from reading Narnia, Lord Of The Rings, Zelazny’s Amber, Dune and so many others!  I also wonder what Danielle and John are going to say about it too.

Mignolaverse.com

Well let’s finish on this topic for today.: Would you like to make a prediction about the B.P.R.D. series before you start reading it?

Aubrey Lovelace

No. I just want to go in with a blank slate. I used to like making predictions on where things were going to go, but watching Lost cured me of that.

Mignolaverse.com

Seems like a reasonable reaction to Lost.

That's our time with Aubrey Lovelace from the Hellboy Book Club. Aubrey, thank you very much for sharing some of your opinions and experiences. I look forward to doing it again and seeing how things have changed for you after reading more.

Aubrey Lovelace

Thanks for chatting with me! I look forward to the next time!
