25 days until Hellboy Day - The Visitor
When we first met the mysterious Visitor, he appeared as a human male, in chains in the dungeons of Hunte Castle. During the Conqueror Worm event, Hellboy met the Visitor’s spirit after fighting Kriegaffe #10. We quickly learned that he had been around, watching and intervening in secret, since long before Hellboy even came to Earth.
The Visitor is part of a race of extra-terrestrial beings, first seen in Seed of Destruction, observing and monitoring the crystal prison of the Ogdru Jahad. On Earth, the Visitor took human form, disguised as a U.S. soldier, and witnessed Hellboy’s arrival upon our plane. His mission was to kill the half-demon infant, thereby preventing the return of the Ogdru Jahad, but he saw in Hellboy a path undetermined, and let him live. He explained his actions to his people, and chose to remain behind on Earth, to observe Hellboy, and carry out his assassination if necessary.
From a distance, disguised as a caucasian human man, he watched Hellboy grow up as any human child would: learning to ride a bicycle, reading comics, loving his dog, and most importantly, saving human lives. He was there when Hellboy fought the Dragon in Saint Leonard’s wood, assisted him secretly, and witnessed the flowers grow from Hellboy’s blood. He was present when Hellboy fought a giant armadillo in Austin Texas.
During his early days observing Hellboy, the Visitor had no home to speak of, so he would sleep as a homeless man. In 1958, while being accosted by teenagers, he was rescued by an African American woman named Ruby. Eventually, they fell in love, he revealed his secret to her, took the name Michael Mathers, and they lived together as husband and wife. They had to deal with constant public derision, due to the time period and mixed race relationship they were in, and he was constantly frustrated with human inequality.
The Visitor had been operating in the shadows from the beginnings of human history. He had been fighting back Ogdru Hem cultists since the earliest forms of civilization. In modern times, because he did not believe Hellboy was ready, the Visitor would take on Ogdru Jahad cultists without Hellboy knowing they even existed. From secret cultists operating in secret, to those secretly disguised as self-help gurus, operating in the secret open, the Visitor handled them all.
As time passed, he did not age, but Ruby, his human wife, kept getting older, and more dependent on him for care. He decided to remain home with her, rather than constantly leave to fight. Eventually, Ruby, the love of his life passed away of old age, and with her, his reason for staying. He finally contacted his people, said his goodbyes, and headed off to Hunte Castle. He was no longer afraid of death [Editor’s note - I don’t think he was ever afraid of anything], and no longer afraid to leave the fate of the world in Hellboy’s capable hands.
