27 days until Hellboy Day - Ualac
Art by Ludovic Rivalland
A minor demon with major aspirations, Ualac demonstrates both the appeal and the pitfalls of upwards mobility. Though low on Pandemonium's pecking order he comes closer than most to claiming the power that lies dormant within Hellboy, thanks to an ultimately doomed plot by recurring antagonist/sleeze-bag Igor Bromhead.
Ualac's history is told in “Box Full of Evil”, tied to a miracle attributed to Saint Dunstan in the tenth century. Popular legend has it that:
“St Dunstan, as the story goes,
Once pull'd the devil by the nose
With red-hot tongs, which made him roar,
That he was heard three miles or more “
-Traditional British folk rhyme
Bromhead reveals the truth behind this folk tale, that Ualac had disguised himself as a woman to try and seduce Dunstan, at that time working as a blacksmith. The demon found himself snatched by the nose by the holy man's tongs, sealed into the titular box and eventually bricked up in the walls of an English mansion.
Following almost 1000 years of imprisonment, Ualac's release is dramatic though short lived. Emerging in the form of a fly he is able to possess one of those who freed him by buzzing into their mouth, demonstrating his power by turning another of those responsible into a monkey. Almost immediately however, Bromhead traps him again and in so doing learns the true, secret name of Hellboy.
Now in his true form as a diminutive demon, Ualac is able to to wrest the crown of the apocalypse from a bound Hellboy and in so doing becomes far greater and more terrible. A vision of what Hellboy could become if he accepts his true role. Despite working his way from lowly fly, to minor demon, to a being of immense power, Ualac's time at the top is short-lived as he receives a pair of Hellboy horns right to the guts.
In a desperate attempt to escape he returns to his minuscule fly form, only to be captured by Hellboy and imprisoned once more by Astaroth, a Grand-Duke of Hell, trapped in amber and returned to the House of the Fly in Pandemonium.
The markings on the 'box full of evil's' lid show the seal associated with Ualac in “The Lesser Key of Solomon”, here he is described as a president of Hell, with the ability to control and manifest serpents, very appropriate for Bromhead's fate in this story.
