39 days until Hellboy Day - Panya
In 1859, at the height of Victorian England’s obsession with the antiquities of ancient Egypt, a mummy unwrapping party took a curious turn, when Panya, the mummy in question, opened her eyes. She was immediately taken under the wing of the Heliopic Brotherhood of Ra, where she learned to read, write, and live in modern English Society.
Harassment by Egyptologist Martin Gylfrid caused Lord Glaren of the Brotherhood to fear her popularity. No one suspected she had psychic capabilities, though they eventually allowed her to escape the Brotherhood’s watch. Freedom was short lived, however, as she escaped into the arms of an even worse group of cultists: the Oannes Society, who relocated her to an island off the coast of Indonesia.
Nearly 150 years later she was able to use her psychic control abilities to send a young girl from the Indonesian mainland to reach Abe Sapien and Ben Daimio. This allerted the B.P.R.D. to the Oannes Society’s secretly genocidal plans, which were then successfully thwarted. Panya was able to find freedom again.
The B.P.R.D. sheltered Panya and the hybrid animals she came to love on her island prison (and helped create?). She tended toward manipulation, both verbally and psychically of her new co-workers. Her motives have always been unclear, but her machinations have never caused any real harm.
She has guided Liz Sherman in her fight against Memnan Saa (Martin Gylfrid), Kate Corrigan through stressful times, and Fenix Espejo through psychic training. She has also proven valuable to the B.P.R.D. organization, assisting them through multiple difficult missions with her psychic gifts. She even faced the Black Flame while trying to save Fenix from his psychic attacks, and showed no fear.
She lived a long, eventful life, but eventually, she tired of the constant conflict. With the end bearing down on the B.P.R.D. headquarters, she assisted everyone in fleeing, released all of her hybrid animals, stood up from her wheelchair, and reflected on the more than 3,000 years she spent on Earth. Thankfully, she did not have to face the end alone.
She enjoyed reading, learning, manipulating people, her hybrid pets, her cat, and making Johann Kraus squirm in his suit. She is survived by her friends, and books of research.
