45 days until Hellboy Day - Ilsa Haupstein
Ilsa Haupstein, the bottomless pit of rage and hatred, was born in 1919 in the German countryside. As a testament to the depths of her coldness, even as an infant, Ilsa never cried. By the age of 17, she was a member of the German Occult Bureau, where she met the Nazi scientists Von Klempt, Kroenen, and Kurtz. During her first assignment, she recruited, and fell in love with the Romanian vampire, Vladimir Giurescu. Later, she would find out that Hitler and the Nazis betrayed her.
Before her betrayal, however, Ilsa was brought on to Project Ragna Rok, and through exposure to the teachings of Rasputin, became one of his most devoted followers. She, along with Kurtz and Kroenen, participated in the ritual that brought Hellboy to Earth, cracking the prison of the Ogdru Jahad. She joined Kurtz and Kroenen in cryogenic sleep, to await her Master’s return.
The Nazi trio was later awoken by the CEO Roderick Zinco on behalf of Rasputin. The years in stasis did nothing to calm her rage, and Ilsa began a new mission to resurrect her love Giurescu. Rasputin’s ghost appeared to her, and, in the hopes of preparing her for the world to come, sealed her body in an iron maiden. Ilsa, ever the devoted follower, was willing to give her life, and love, to Rasputin. Unfortunately for her, the blood only sustained Giurescu and her new iron body was taken by the goddess Hecate.
Years later, Giurescu betrayed the truth of Hecate and Haupstein’s connection to Igor Bromhead, who sealed Ilsa’s corpse in a wall with Gierescu’s bones. While this was her last appearance in the comics, we cannot be certain if this is the last that we see of her in the coming days, as her hatred was a fire that would rival even the furnaces of hell.
