Hot Toys announces Hellboy (2019) 1/6th Scale Figure

I am an avid toy collector, one could even say addict, and Hot Toys is my drug.  Their Movie Masterpiece Series (MMS), capture the characters you know and love better than any other company.  And there is no other character that I have hit the Pre-Order button harder and faster for than Hellboy.

Whether you loved, liked, or hated the new Hellboy film, this 2019 incarnation looks positively demonic. Joel Harlow and his team did an amazing job at designing the new look, and leave it up to the masters over at Hot Toys to capture his likeness so perfectly for their newest figure.

One major feature of this particular figure, is the seamless body.  Many characters, such as Captain America, Batman, Superman, are covered up with clothing or armor, hiding all of the articulated joints.  The approach the company has been taking with characters that have exposed body parts, is this soft, rubber-like body design.

From a visual perspective, the benefits are obvious.  When comparing the visible articulation of Drax the Destroyer from Guardians of the Galaxy, it takes a bit away from the realism that the other, fully clothed figures enjoy.

The way that Hot Toys resolved that disconnect, is by employing the above mentioned seamless body. This is done by wrapping either a metal “skeleton” or a plastic body with soft vinyl, covering the unsightly joints, and making for a more stunning visual.

There are downsides to the seamless bodies however, and that is with posing, especially long term. When you articulate the arm for instance, the range of mobility is limited.  At the shoulders, you cannot raise the arm as high, or as far back as standard figures, because you risk tearing the soft vinyl. Bending at the elbows comes with it’s own limitations, both visually and in regards to damaging the figure.

With another figure having seamless parts, the Infinity War Thanos, they knew that one of the most popular poses was going to be a bent gauntlet arm, and the way they resolved this issue, was by sculpting and providing a complete second arm, already posed at 90 degrees. Luckily, this Thanos comes with his “do you even lift bro” outfit, which provides a place that the shoulder joint can be hidden, and not take away from the clean appearance. Unfortunately, a second arm couldn’t be employed with Hellboy, as his whole torso is going to be one piece.

When you bend the elbows at 90 degrees or more, the soft body begins to fold into itself.  For short term situations such as photo sessions, this is not much of an issue, and any of the unsightly folding can be fixed in post. In the long term, you are not going to want to pose the figures in your displays with the elbows bent too far, as over time it will deform the plastic, and possibly cause cracking.

None of this is to say that the Hellboy figure isn’t going to be spectacular, I just want to give you the full picture, and advise some caution with this body type.  This toy looks like it is going to be fantastic, and comes with so many display options that can overcome any posing limitations. That, along with the large amount of accessories, provides so many possibilities.

As for what comes in the package, firstly, we have this amazing face sculpt, with interchangeable horns/horn stumps.  It has a translucent flaming Crown of the Apocalypse (I still wonder how it is going to secure to the head). As for weapons, he has 2 guns (spoiler alert), and both the regular AND flaming Excalibur.  They even included a translucent flaming lightning effect to attach to the standard Excalbur. He comes with 6 left hands, including one to hold Excalibur and one to hold his gun, and 3 different Right Hand of Doom palms, a fist, a relaxed, and one to hold Excalibur. His lower body is clothed with his black cargo pants and boots, his full belt of charms, and for his upper body you can either display him bare, or he comes with a B.P.R.D. t-shirt and his duster jacket.  Like most of the newer figures, Hellboy comes with a back drop, but one of the coolest additions to this figure, that not all Hot Toys come with, is a three-dimensional display stand. Most stands come with a standard flat base, but our boy is going to be standing in sculpted translucent flames.

To say I am excited is an understatement, and no, I did not even wait a minute to pre-order him.  The price point seems a bit higher than your standard Hot Toys figure, where most land in the range of $230-$250USD, he is being sold for $266 USD.  That price is around the starting point for what they normally consider a “deluxe” figure, and this is possibly due to the amount of accessories and the base.  They have a release window of April-June 2020, and hopefully they do not run into production issues that cause a delay.
